To "open source" or not to "open source"
Like anyone who works in open source, I often get questions about how and why you would open source your software project. What's the advantage when no one pays you for it?
It's a simple question with a really complicated answer. Part of the answer found its way into our latest column at the Open Source Business Resource magazine:
"A lot of organizations feel very protective of their investment in intellectual property. For some, sharing of any kind is out of the question. For others, it's an interesting idea, but they don't quite "get it" and they're not sure how it might apply to them.....My advice would be to follow the value. Where is it coming from? If you can answer that question, you'll know if open source is for you."
