tools
Notepad++ - source code editor and Notepad replacement.
How we use it: to edit txt, html, php, sql (and more) files. This editor has syntax highlight feature that makes reading files much easier on the eyes ;) Many more features makes it my favourite code editor.
Windows Grep - tool for searching files for text strings that you specify. Although Windows and many other programs have file searching capabilities built-in, none can match the power and versatility of Windows Grep.
How we use it: to find any phrase in files and folders (yes, Windows Grep can search whole folders). With the use of Regular Expressions and replacement feature this application is an amazing web developer/programmer friend.
WinMerge - WinMerge is an Open Source (GPL) visual text file differencing and merging tool for Windows. It is highly useful for determining what has changed between project versions, and then merging changes between versions.
How we use it: to compare files or whole directories. Especially useful to find differences between the source file and the modified file.
You can find more free and open source tools at the SourceForge.Net or by using a search engine to browse the internet.
